The artist has developed a habit of photographing islands. They appear often in his work, even on film, as points of access to a parallel history. Islands, exotically cryptic and sublime, can act as non-places to carry out the actions of an apocalyptic future. Their remote nature conceals technologies of surveillance and incarceration but they remain on the horizon as dreamscapes. This series of works, commissioned for the artist’s solo exhibition at the MCA Chicago in 2017, documents several islands in the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, with photographs of minerals and other objects that the artist collected during his travels.
